About This Service
Scar Tissue Massage is a common method used to help remodel scar tissue that has developed in injured tissue. It is a treatment used after surgery, fracture, or soft tissue injuries like sprains and strains. Scar tissue massage is also known as scar mobilization or scar tissue mobilization.
As body tissue heals from trauma (surgeries, injuries, car accidents) adhesions develop and scar tissue forms. Scars continue to grow and change throughout the recovery process (12 to 18 months). A specific protocol will be followed with new scars, but massage will not help soften a scar more than two years old. The therapist will guide you in self-care techniques that you can practice at home.
Be sure to check with your doctor to ensure that proper healing has taken place and that scar tissue massage is appropriate. In general, the scar must be fully closed and no scabbing present to begin scar massage.
